More Tips on Winterizing Your Boat

In our last post we covered the most essential boat maintenance procedures that all boat owners should follow before storing their boat for the winter. There are a few additional boat maintenance procedures that careful boat owners may choose to perform when winterizing their boat. While optional, the following maintenance routines will ensure that your boat weathers the cold weather in good shape and is ready to launch next spring.

  1. Replace the spark plugs. After removing the old plugs and before installing new ones, spray oil on the cylinders.
  2. As you would with any vehicle, change the engine oil and filter.
  3. Remove the prop and grease the prop shaft.
  4. To prevent gas tank condensation and corrosion, add fuel stabilizer to your boat’s gas tank. To flush the stabilized gas through the fuel injectors and carburetors, run your engine briefly.
  5. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to winterize your boat’s fresh water system.
  6. Remove the outdrive and grease the U-joint, leaving outdrives in the down position to prevent water collection.
