Former Senator Spied Checking Out Yachts Online

When you decided to sell your boat online, be aware that the recent boom in technological devices works in your favor. People can view your online boat ad anywhere–from a public library computer to a handheld device.

The Washington Examiner recently reported that a former senator (who is now a lobbyist) was spotted checking out information on yachts as he passed the time during a train ride. Someone who alerted the Examiner’s  ”Yeas & Nays” column said that the former senator was looking up yachts on his iPad. So, there you have it–you can even look into boats while you are using another form of transportation.

Since anything that people who can influence the government do is of interest, the gossip column speculated that this one-time senator who is now a lobbyist must be doing pretty well financially if he is looking into yachts.

If you are looking to sell your boat, then you will be happy to have people looking at your online boat ad anywhere they can. The good news is that people who have the disposable income for iPads, tablets and smart phone are also likely to have money to spend on a boat. This is another reason to advertise your boat sale online—fewer people are reading print publications these days. You need to go where people are to get something sold and there are a lot of people online.

Focus on Basics When Writing Online Boat Ads

When writing an ad so that you can sell your boat online, keep in mind that your ad is one of many that potential buyers will peruse. It is tempting to try to impress these buyers you can’t see with lots of adjectives and descriptive words but those things may be a distraction. Even if they are excited by a glowing description, buyers will still be looking to see if your boat is the kind of boat they are looking to buy.

Start with the basics because buyers are looking for a boat, not a commercial. Make sure to tell them the make and model and note some of the more useful features. This does not mean that your ad should not have any descriptions, just remember that words like “reliable” carry more weight than “fun.” People who are looking for previously-owned boats want to be assured that they are getting a vessel that they can use for a long time.

Also, you do not have to be afraid to mention recent repairs out of fear that a buyer needs to know what they are getting. Knowing that you have recently replaced something does not mean a buyer will be turned off; instead a buyer may be glad to know that they will not have to take on certain repairs soon after buying your boat.

Take an Online Boating Safety Quiz

We not only encourage you to buy or sell your boat online; we also want to encourage you to use safe boating practices in the water. You can engage in an online transaction to buy or sell a boat and you can also get some help online with learning about water safety, however it is up to you to put safe boating practices to work when you are in the water.

The National Safe Boating Council is co-sponsor of a boating safety quiz online. This quiz was designed to help you test how much you know about boating safety and to get you thinking about safe boating practices. Once you take the quiz yourself, send it to your family and friends who are boat owners so they too can see just how much they know.

Even the best boaters can use a refresher to remind them of best practices when spending time on a boat. And novices need to have safe boating practices reinforced often so that they remember to apply these principles when they are out on the water. For example, when you first start to get into boating, it can be difficult to remember all the parts of a boat. You need to know these practices for general knowledge but also just in case a more experienced boater refers to one of them and you need to locate that part of the boat quickly.

Want to Sell Your Boat? Boat Sales are Increasing

The Wasau Daily Herald reports that sales of recreational vehicles, pools and boats are increasing. This may surprise some, since the economy remains sluggish, but some people are taking a carpe diem approach to recreation. Life is short and there are no guarantees, why not have some fun?

One expert interviewed said that “a rebound in some customers’ 401(k) packages means they are willing to spend money, and sales of aluminum fishing boats, pontoon boats and personal watercraft are especially strong.”

Another person who in the business of selling recreation equipment noted that if gas remains less that $4 a gallon, people will still be likely to buy, while still another said that people prefer to invest in “permanent leisure purchases” rather than one-time vacations.

Other factors affecting boat sales are the unfortunate nature of natural disasters that have disrupted the supply chain and the fact that manufacturers are reluctant to overproduce inventory. If you have been thinking that you want to sell your boat online, this may be a good time to do so. People are looking for boats as way to enjoy the warm weather and they may not be willing to buy a new one or they may not find what they want.

California Boating Enthusiasts Tell Locals: ‘Get Your Butt in a Boat’

We know how much fun boating can be and that it can be that much more fun when you are a boat owner, in charge of your own vessel. The Petaluma Small Craft Center Coalition has adopted a rather blunt slogan to encourage people to get out on the water: “Get Your Butt in a Boat.”

The group is urging people to get out into the water for fun and as a way to raise money so more people can enjoy the Petaluma River: “every dollar collected at Day on the River will go toward the construction of a floating dock…” The group “hopes to eventually inspire enough interest among Petalumans to fully fund its own public, small-craft boathouse.” It is great to see the area’s boating enthusiasts coming together to make this happen.

You don’t have to live near the Petaluma River to heed the call to ‘get your butt in a boat.’ Check out our online boat ads where you will see a variety of vessels in all shapes and sizes. Whether you want to fish, sail away on a yacht or live the floating life on a houseboat, there is a boat that will fit your needs.

Traveling by Yacht? You Can Now Spend up to 90 Days in Bermuda

An online news source for Bermuda recently reported that “Yacht visitors can take their time to enjoy Bermuda up to 90 days.”

This is great news because before this announcement people sailing to Bermuda were allowed to stay 21 days. The island’s government hopes that the generous extension of the time that people traveling by yacht are allowed to stay will bring in more visitors and that these visitors will spend more money on the island and boost Bermuda s economy.

An official from Bermuda’s cabinet stated:

“Visiting yachts and crews spent over $10 million in Bermuda in 2010. Extending the permitted length of stay will increase this contribution to the local economy and do more to further the positive image of Bermuda as ‘open for business’.”

The change will take effect June 1. The longer stays are not free; there is a $250 fee for each person. Visitors how sail into Bermuda by yacht will need to verify their citizenship and prove that they have health insurance as well as declare that they do not intend to look for of procure work in the country. These requirements are for yacht owners traveling to Bermuda as well as people on the boat’s crew.

Kick Off a Safe Summer Boating Season

Although some boat owners were getting boats ready in the spring, Memorial Day weekend is considered the official kickoff for the a summer season of boating fun.

Make sure that you know the rules and regulations for boating safety in your area. Sometimes the rules can be very specific. For example, in one Alabama jurisdiction,

“…anyone born before April 28, 1954 is exempt from the requirement of having a certification to drive a boat.

Even if someone has a certificate for passing the boater’s license test, he or she must take that certificate to renew a driver’s license and have it designated on the license.

A boating license can be obtained when someone is 12 years old, but boaters cannot drive by themselves at that age…Someone at least 21 years old has to be with them.”

Overall, boaters anywhere should have enough life jackets on hand for everyone on their boat. It is important to observe speed limits (and it helps if you are aware of them ahead of time). It is also very important not to drive a boat while intoxicated. And while others on the boat who are not driving may feel free to drink in excess, it is not a good idea to have a number of intoxicated people on a moving vessel in the water.

Sailing with Your Pet, pt. 3

Boat owners know that they need to carry sunscreen for themselves but they may not think about how to protect their pets from getting sunburned. Even animals with lots of fur can get burned by the sun’s rays and animals cannot tell you in words when the heat is getting to them.

Some animals can use the same kind of sunscreen that people use as long as it is hypoallergenic. You should check with your vet about what kind of sunscreen to use for your pet.

Where you really need to be careful is your pet’s eyes. Both the eyes and the skin surrounding them can be very sensitive to sunlight but you do not want to use sunscreen near the eyes.

People like to put sunglasses on their pets to be funny or to take pictures. However, if you really want to protect your pet’s eyes when they spend prolonged periods of time on a boat in the sun, get special goggles that are designed for animals. These usually wrap around an animal’s head so they do not fall off and can also protect the eyes from insects.

Keeping your pet protected from sunburn can ensure that your companion enjoys many sailing adventures with you.

Sailing with Your Pet, pt. 2

Pets, like people, can act a little different aboard a boat because it is not their usual environment but if you take time to make your pet comfortable, you can have a good time.

Another thing that people and pets have in common is a tendency to eat more when they are in unfamiliar places. You can make a boat trip easier on your pet by providing smaller meals more often than you would at home. This may help with nervousness and your pet may find comfort in eating more often, especially the first time you take your pet sailing.

If you leave out dry food for your pet, you can take a trick from food stylists to make it remain appealing: spray a little mist of water on dry food that has been out for a while. Pets are big on scents and the mist will bring out the scent of the food.

A jittery pet may want to chew things on board and this can be dangerous if those things include line that you need or a cord. Rubbing line or cord with a dry bar of soap can discourage chewing.

Sailing with Your Pet, pt. 1

Sailing is something that can be enjoyed by the entire family, including the four-legged members, with some preparation. You don’t just get on your boat at set sail without gathering supplies for yourself, so take the same precautions with your pet.

Pets need pet-flotation devices (PFDs) that fit well without being restricting movement. Rather than just buying one by looking at it, try it on your pet. You should ask permission first. Most stores that sell marine supplies know that you need to try a PFD on a pet to see how it fits before you commit to buying it.

You don’t want an emergency or accident to be the time when you find out that the PFD you got for your pet does not provide the kind of buoyancy that your pet needs to stay afloat.

To test the effectiveness of a PFD, calmly walk your pet into a body of water that you know to be safe. You know your pet, so you know just how your pet may react to being in the water. If your pet does not like the water, be prepared for this, but keep in mind that you really need to test out the PFD before you take your pet sailing with it.
